Three Reasons You Need Temperature Control For Clothing Storage

Posted on

When you have extra clothing that does not fit in closets, or if you are between homes and looking for a new space, a storage unit is a good investment. Renting a storage unit by the month will permit you the option of finding a new dresser and armoire, or finding a new place to live, without needing to rush. If you are storing clothing by itself, you can place clothing on covered rolling racks or inside of storage tubs for an easier move. One thing you should consider when storing clothing is temperature control. Here are three reasons you need a temperature-controlled storage unit for clothing.

Fur and leather clothing needs to be stored properly

If you have upscale items such as leather jackets and furs, you will need to have these stored correctly. If it gets too hot or too cold, furs can get ruined and leathers can crack and dry out. Since furs will need to be stored in the appropriate liners, these need to remain at a constant stable temperature so that the fur is not prone to matting or flattening. Leather can also warp in heat, especially thin leather jackets or pants. If you want to keep your clothing in good condition, you will need to know that the temperature will never get too hot or too cold.

The containers themselves can warp

Even if you place clothing inside of a tub or a plastic storage container, it could possibly warp. If the container begins to melt this could spell disaster for the clothing. A container that melts could melt onto the clothing itself, which would ruin your belongings. The container could also have holes that are exposed, making it easy for moths and other animals and insects to get into your clothing and create holes or damage. A heated and cooled unit that is kept at a stable temperature prevents this issue.

Moisture is kept away

If the unit is susceptible to changes outside, it could get cold, then hot within a few days. This could create moisture, which could mildew clothing and lead to clothing loss for you. Instead of leaving it up to chance, a temperature-controlled unit will keep the moisture in the air at bay and will allow your clothing to thrive in proper, closet-like conditions. Every once in a while, enter the unit to make sure that no moisture has collected and that the temperature has remained stable.
