4 Ways To Keep Your Books Safe In Storage

Posted on

When it comes to storing your books in a storage unit, you don't want to just throw them in a box and put them in your self-storage unit. You want to make sure that you take precautions if you want your books to come out of storage in good condition.

Clean Your Books Off

It may not seem natural to clean off your books. After all, they are not clothing and should not be covered in sweat or food. However, grease and food can get transferred from your fingers to the book. Insects and bugs can get into your books and even lay eggs on them. Your books can also get covered in dust and debris.

Don't assume your books are clean. Instead, take the time to personally clean all of your books. Use a brush or duster attachment, and carefully dust the front cover, back cover, and sides of the book. If you are a person who generally puts papers inside of books, remove those as you clean your books as well.

Don't use a damp cloth; you don't want to get your books wet. Wet books can lead to mildew damage to your books.

Wrap Your Books Up

Your books may seem strong, but you should wrap them up so that they don't get damaged during the storage process. It is important to make sure that the books are properly wrapped. Appropriate materials to wrap your books up in include bubble wrap, paper towels, or acid-free paper. You don't want to wrap your books up with any plastic at all. Plastic retains moisture, which will damage your books over time.

Package Your Books Safely

After you wrap up your books, you need to make sure you package your books safely. Lay your books flat on the cover; don't store them standing up like you would on your bookshelf. Laying them flat by the covers will put the least amount of pressure on the books while they are in storage.

You are going to want to put your books in acid-free storage boxes in order to protect your books from any possible damage. Don't pack too many books in a single box either; books are really heavy, so keep the boxes as light as possible.

When it comes to keeping your books safe, you are going to want to make sure you keep your books clean, wrap your books up with the appropriate materials, and package your books in acid-free boxes and keep the weight light as well.
